The Trek Experience, Moderate

Welcome to Team – Har ki dun Protection & Mountaineering Association – Bali Pass Trek In Uttarakhand (India) – The best Summer . trek in the Himalayas Uttarkashi District (Uttarakhand)

The trail begins at Sankri base camp and last road head Taluka village & concludes across the Bali pass at Jaanki Chatti village below the Yumnotri temple. The linear distance of the trek is about 65 km – a measure that is meaningless on the mountains. What matters on the mountain is the work you do against or along gravity i.e., the altitude gained or lost & the time spent. The trail starts at about 2000 Meters , climbs up to about 5000 Meters & then descends to about 2000 Meters. This vertical traverse of 6000 Meters over 6 days defines the difficulty level of this trek.
Trek is a classic Summer trek. The trek provides a great opportunity for trekkers to see the scenic beauty and experience the life of remote villages of Garhwal Himalayas.
Bali Pass Trek lies in the Govind Wild life Sanctuary and National Park in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand.

The colourful Himalayan monal, the state bird of Uttarakhand, thrives in the forests here.

There is a four-wheel-drive road that connects Sankri with Taluka. You can hire a jeep (locally) for this, subject to the condition of the road. This is a landslide prone-route, and is often closed during the monsoons. The trail to Taluka is almost level, going through 10-11 mountain bends. On the way, there are three big streams, almost submerging sections of the road in water. The hike is scenic, going past a series of wild roses and irises; bamboo, chestnut and cedar (deodar) trees. Beautiful Camp site

The Bali Pass  trek campsite is great for birding and surrounded by beautiful snow peaks. Bali Pass Trek  makes for a terrific trek in virgin snow, with pretty campsites and astonishingly wide clearings in the forests.

The excitement of the previous day hadn’t worn off, neither had the fatigue. Reluctantly we all arose & got dressed for further descent leaving the Bali Pass behind & in the past. Ony the memories of the wonderful day would be our friends forever. A gradual walk down the mountains brought us to a wonderful locale for a group photograph & everyone posed with all the enthusiasm & noise. But soon excitement would give way to scare.

We were at the verge of a very steep descent – almost 80-85 % gradient. Once again the porters were ready to porter us down. Each porter held one porter age by the hand & securely guided their steps down with some additonal reinforcements at critical points. This was a pitch of about 70-80 m that seemed to have no bottom & no end. Once we reached the bottom of the ordeal we felt happy to be alive & our porters relieved to have the load off their heads.

Steep descent continued but nothing as bad as the ones that we experienced yesterday & today. But what it lacked in its lethality it more than made up in its gruesome length. The rocks gave way to the shades of the forest but the downhill descent did not give any sign of mercy. We paused for lunch break – shifting a small load of paranthas from our back pack to our tummies, & we continued our downward course. Suddenly the trail took a sharp turn to left, changed into hard concrete surface & the gradient became positive again. Yes, once again we were climbing. This climb was to take us to the Yumnotri Temple – & it seemed that the emphasis was on “Yum” with the “notri” being almost silent. Gods were mocking us & had to prove it to us that its not easy to reach them. Close to & at the temple I met my usual frustration by the way religion has degenerated into business – sell God to the ingorant & make some money in the bargain. I could hear the temple’s PA system (well God’s are hearing impaired) play –

Bali Pass is one of the least explored treks that links Har Ki Dun valley to Yamunotri valley. The trek offers amphitheatre views of Swargarohini peaks 1 & 2, Banderpooch and Kala Nag or Black Peak. The pass is situated at an altitude of 4950 Meters . Due to its high altitude the post monsoon period is considered best to trek. In pre monsoon season there is a plenty of snow that makes climbing to the pass more challenging and technical. The trekking route is challenging & is not recommended for beginners. The main attractions of this trek includes pine forests of Govind Pashu National Park, meadows of Debshu Bugyal, beautiful camp site of Rainbasera, alpine lake of Ruinsara, Yamnotri temple and much more.

High Altitude Snow Peak In Bali Pass  crossing

It is one of the most beautiful valleys in the Western Himalayas. A delight for trekkers, both in summer and winter, this valley is accessible through Govind National Park – Govind Pashu vihar -known for its rich variety of flora and fauna. The trail through alpine meadows, moraine ridges, glacier basins, pine forests and ancient villages, gives you spectacular valley views and a chance to experience the wonderful slow-paced local lifestyle.

This is the only valley from where one can see Swargarohini – I, II, III, (6300, Meters ) Bandarpoonch and Blackpeak (6387 Meters ) all together. One can also see the Ruinsara Lake (3400  Meters ) peaks from here

Bali Pass is a high altitude pass at 4953 Meters  that connects the Har ki dun & Ruinsara valleys with the Yumnotri valley in the Uttarakhand region of Indian Himalayas. Rauinsara taal is a natural fresh water lake near the base of Ruinsara peak. The region is picturesque & lush green after the monsoon rains in June-August. Backpack carrying:

H.P.M.A expects all trekkers to carry their own backpacks. If for some reason a trekker is unable to carry his or her backpack, he/she can offload the backpack to the H.P.M.A office by paying a charge of Rs 300 per backpack per day. . This money has to be paid to H.P.M.A office … (last moment arrangements are difficult and expensive).

Fitness:

An high altitude trek in the Himalayas requires considerable fitness. Your body needs to train itself to process more work with lower levels of oxygen. Therefore, on treks, cardiovascular training is critically important. You need to be able to jog a distance of 4.5 km in 30 mins before start of the trek. Unable to do so can make your trek difficult. In addition, preparation of trek needs to include strength and flexibility training. Trekkers who have not adequately prepared may be asked to discontinue the trek at any point.

H.P.M.A is not responsible for any loss/damage of any of your equipment on the trek.

Doctors: At H.P.M.A ,

Safety of a trek comes & respect to wildlife first. You will experience it first hand on the slope. Your team is accompanied by experienced trek leaders, safety gears, high end trek equipment, high altitude first aid kits and most importantly the right information. As an initiative in this regard we want to encourage doctor trekkers to function as team doctors..

Below is the Har Ki Dun Trek registration form. Please fill it out and click on the submit button. Please wait for an email confirmation of your position in the batch from our side (usually in less than 15 hours)..
